APC UPS Battery BackupYour UPS Battery Should Typically Last You 3-5 Years

It’s hard to tell when exactly you should change your UPS battery.  You can do regular tests to make sure that the unit is working properly or on most of the newer models you can check the display to see how your battery is holding up.  The last thing you want to do is have it fail on you when you need it most though.

The Kind of Load They’ve Been Put Under Can Make a Big Difference

UPS BatterySealed lead-acid gel batteries, typically used in a UPS, like being “topped off” and are typically damaged by a full drain. If they’ve stayed above 80% charge pretty much their entire lifetime at a nice even temperature, I’d expect them to be last closer to the 4 or 5-year mark. If you do regular load tests that drain them most of the way, or if you’ve lost all power for extended periods and had to empty them completely a few times, it might be a good idea to go ahead and replace after 3 years to be safe.

Sometimes It’s Better to Just Replace Them

In certain cases, depending on how old the UPS unit is, you are better off just replacing it completely instead of replacing just the batteries.  Technologies change at a rapid pace and newer, more efficient, units could be available to replace your aging UPS with something that has the ability to save you money.

If you are unsure of whether or not your UPS is performing at it’s fullest potential, or if you don’t even have any UPS units installed, please contact us today and schedule a consultation.  We will make sure your systems stay up and running even if you lose your power.
